Are you tired of setting goals that you never seem to achieve? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, most people never achieve their goals because they don’t know how to set them properly.
The key to setting goals and achieving them is to have a system in place that will hold you accountable and keep you on track. Without a system, it’s all too easy to get sidetracked or give up entirely.
But what kind of system should you use?
There are many goal-setting systems that have been around for ages. Perhaps those have not worked very well for you. Therefore, you’ll need to use a new system.
9 Steps to achieve your goals
We recommend a radical new approach on how to set goals and achieve them. An approach that allows you to incorporate your own desires and dreams, and in the process, let you discover your natural passions and let those fuel your actions.
Visualize your perfect future life
Spend some quality time thinking about what your ideal life would look like. Don’t hold back. Identify as many aspects of your perfect life in great detail.
Some key areas to consider are:
– Where do you want to live?
– What kind of job or career do you want?
– Do you want to get married and have children?
– What kind of lifestyle do you want to live?
– What kind of vacations and travel do you want to take?
– What kind of hobbies and interests do you want to pursue?
Once you have a clear picture in your mind of what your perfect future looks like, it’s time to start setting goals that will help make it a reality. But we are not quite ready to begin doing that yet. Let’s move on to Step 2.
Identify the emotions you feel in that future image
Emotions are the new ingredient that we’ve added to the goal-setting process. Most ‘how to set goals’ systems never even mention emotion. This is a shame because they are not taking advantage of the primary motivating fuel that we humans naturally possess.
When you get clear on the emotions you will feel in your future image, it will be easier to maintain focus and enthusiasm for achieving your goals. Emotions act as a built-in GPS system, guiding you along the path of least resistance to your goal.
For example, if one of your goals is to earn an annual salary of $100,000, the emotion of happiness can serve as your guide. You’ll be more likely to take actions that lead to happiness and away from actions that would make you feel unhappy. So if a job opportunity comes along that pays less than you want but makes you happy, it may be worth considering.
Think about the buying decisions you make for products. Unless it’s the necessities you must have, that decision you make to buy is an emotional one, not a logical one. Advertising executives have known this fact for generations.

Rehearse a typical day in your future life
Very few people ever rehearse a typical day in their desired future life. This is unfortunate because doing so would eliminate some disappointments down the road.
Oftentimes, we get drawn in by the glory and prestige of achieving a certain goal, but never think about what comes along with that objective. Let’s look at an example.
It’s quite common for people who love and adore animals to set a goal of becoming a veterinarian. But a typical day for veterinarians is to deal with animals who are suffering – even a few that must be put down. Most animal lovers could not bear such an occupation.
This is why you need to look behind the curtain and consider what certain goals would really mean in your daily life. You may be shocked to learn certain other goals would be best suited for you.
Look back over the path from the future
Now, this step requires some deep visualization of your future goals. At this point, you’ll need to spend some quality time getting clear about your future ideal life. It should be an image that you have visited many times.
You need to be so familiar with your future life that you are seeing yourself immersed in it. This may sound outlandish to some of you, but this is very powerful and make this goal-setting method stand out from all the others.
When you have that clear picture of your living that future ideal life, put yourself inside the mind of that future you.
Stay with me here – that is powerful stuff.
From the mind of that future you, look back over the path you took to reach that ideal life.
What were the steps you took?
What were the feelings you felt?
Who else might have assisted or advised you?
We recommend you do this drill several times and keep asking your future self for guidance. This is plain and simple time distortion, which is an amazing tool for persuasion and motivation.
Take notes and jot down all guidance you get from this exercise. Review these notes periodically and then let your subconscious mind evaluate them. If you are persistent, you’ll eventually discover a unique new path towards that future life.
Work backward to identify milestones
Hopefully, you understand that the last step was one that required a lot of quality time and thought. Spending a few weeks or even a month on that step alone is not unreasonable. But we don’t like assigning a specific amount of time because each of us is different, and have different needs.
Not that your path has been defined, you’ll want to begin identifying the milestones you’ll need to reach for achieving the goal of living your ideal life.
These should be pretty obvious and not be too difficult to define. The main thing here is to line up your required milestones in the proper order of completion.
This will be the order you’ll use to begin breaking down your milestones into more manageable pieces.
For each milestone, ask yourself what needs to happen in order for it to be completed. This will help you further break down your milestones into actionable items.
Once you have a good idea of what needs to be done, you can begin planning out how you’re going to do it.
Start setting goals to reach those milestones
Now you are beginning to get more specific about reaching your goals for these milestones. For each milestone, list out the specific tasks required to achieve each one.
Do your best to break these tasks into actionable steps that you can complete.
The key here is to be as specific as possible so that you can clearly see what needs to be done in order to reach each milestone. Once you have your list of specific tasks, it’s time to start setting deadlines.
Set deadlines to complete your milestones
Now you will want to establish deadlines for accomplishing each of your milestones. This will help to ensure you are held accountable and that you complete your work in a timely manner.
When setting deadlines and milestones, it is important to make sure they are realistic. You don’t want to set yourself up for failure by making goals that are impossible to reach.
Now that you have your goals and deadlines, you will need to create a plan of action. This plan should detail how you intend to complete each goal. This will help to keep you on track and focused as you work towards your goals.
As you work towards your goals, it is important to measure your progress. This will help you to see how far you have come and what still needs to be done. By measuring your progress, you can adjust your plan of action as needed to ensure you are on track to reach your goals.
Reaching your goals is not always easy. There will be times when you feel like giving up. It is important to stay motivated and focused on your goals. Remember why you set the goal in the first place and what it will mean to you once it is accomplished.
Goal setting is a necessary part of any successful endeavor. By taking the time to set goals and create a plan of action, you increase your chances of success. Stay motivated and focused on your goals, and don’t give up even when things get tough. With dedication and hard work, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
Layout goal-setting plan for your perfect life
Your master goal-setting plan for your perfect life must be written down (or printed out) for your frequent reading and reference. Treat it as a living document – one that can be modified and adjusted as necessary.
A good way to keep your goals in front of you is to create a vision board – a collage of images, words, and phrases that represent what you want to achieve. Place it in a prominent spot where you’ll see it every day, such as on your fridge or bathroom mirror.
It’s important to refer to your goals often, especially when you’re feeling lost or discouraged. Let them serve as a compass that guides you back on track.
As you continue working towards your goals, you may find that some of them need to be modified. That’s perfectly normal! You may realize that a certain goal is no longer feasible or that it would be better to break it down into smaller goals. Don’t be afraid to make changes as needed.
There will be times when it feels like all your hard work isn’t paying off. Stay focused on your goals and remind yourself of why you’re doing this. It might help to find a role model or mentor who can support and encourage you.
Don’t beat yourself up if you sometimes fall behind or fail to meet a deadline. Every goal journey is full of ups and downs. Just pick yourself up and keep going!
Start taking action today
If you want to achieve your goals, the most important thing you can do is start taking action today. There are a lot of things that can get in the way of taking action towards our goals. We can be afraid of failure, we can procrastinate, or we might just not know where to start. But if we don’t take action, our goals will never become reality.
Remember, we can always visualize and meditate about our future life and ask our future self for guidance. Doing this will always move you closer to your life goals.
Each morning you get up to start your day, have an objective to improve just a little that day. If we improve just 1% each day, just think how much better we get after an entire year!
